I Studied 100+ Startups, This DESTROYS Their Sales

Are you missing out on sales without realizing it?

There’s a very big chance you are because I studied over 100 startups, and after reviewing them, I kept seeing the same expensive mistakes over and over again that were wrecking their sales – mistakes you might be making right now.

So today, I’m going to show you the number one mistake startups make that destroys their sales and how you can fix it with a simple 3-step framework – one you can start using today.

But first, let me show you three examples of real startups so you can see exactly what the big mistake is.
The big mistake most startups make
Using overcomplicated, vague messaing
Examples ...
Examples of bad messaging
If you overcomplicate your messaging, you destroy your sales.

The big mistake

Let’s start with our first example: A tech startup. Now, to be fair, I changed the images, logos, and texts – I’m not going to blame anyone publicly here.

So this startup created an app that helps people be more productive. Task management, time tracking, team collaboration, project budgeting... you name it. The app can do it.

They have cool images, some testimonials, a short video that shows what the app can do, and even a free demo to test it. At first glance, it looks great.
Example 3
Second startup – a service-based startup. This company offers digital marketing services like social media management, SEO, paid ads, email marketing, and so on.

Again, at first look, it seems like they’re doing everything right on their sales page.
Example 2
Now, let’s look at our third example. An app that helps people relax with daily meditation tips. Again, solid sales page, right?

Some reviews, clean images, looks professional.
Example 1
Now, let’s compare them. And here’s the issue that many startups make, and it’s killing their sales:

✏️ If I didn’t tell you what each of these products was… would you know what they do? Probably not.

You see headlines like:

→ “Supercharge Your Workflow with Smart Automation.”
→ “Accelerate Your Growth with Data-Driven Strategies.”
→ “Elevate Your Mindset with Science-Backed Mindfulness.”

I mean, what does that even mean? It sounds fancy – but it says nothing. And that’s the mistake:

Overcomplicated, vague messaging.

Trust me, if you do that, you are destroying your sales. But why do founders keep doing this? It’s usually one of 3 reasons.
POWERFUL STARTUP RESOURCES
The reason why founders overcomplicate
They try to sound clever
They try to compete with larger companies
They have a desire to stand out

Why founders overcomplicate

Reason 1: Shiny object syndrome

First – and I am sure you know this - you read a blog post about the “latest startup growth hack” or see a competitor’s slick landing page and suddenly think:

“Hmm… Maybe we need that too.”

Or you hear a cool buzzword and start thinking, “That sounds more impressive than what we’re saying now on our website.”

But here’s the thing: Trying to do too much or sound too clever almost always backfires. Because in the end, no one knows what you’re actually doing.

And no one will buy.

Reason 2: Trying to compete with larger companies

The second reason is trying to compete with bigger players in your space – the ones with full product suites and polished messaging – and it’s easy to fall into the trap of:

“We need to look like them if we want to compete.”

But let’s be real: you’re not Google, HubSpot, or Headspace. And you don’t need to be. So when you try to copy them you just end up sounding generic. Don’t do that. What works for them won’t work for you, especially early on.

You win by being very specific and crystal clear, not by copying the big guys.

Reason 3: Desire to stand out

The third reason is a classic – the desire to stand out. You want to be different, unique, memorable. You want people to say:

"Wow, I have never seen something like this before." I get it.

But here’s the issue: Trying too hard to be different often makes your message confusing. You add clever slogans, or buzzwords, or weird phrases that might sound cool, but again – people won’t know what you do.

So remember this – and this is a good test you can do right now to check if your messaging is good:

✏️ Show your sales page to someone who doesn’t know anything about your startup. Give them 3 seconds - then ask them to tell you what you do.

If they can’t tell, you need to fix this immediately. Because here’s a little secret: People who visit your sales page won’t spend more than 3 seconds trying to understand your product.

If they don’t immediately get it, they will leave forever. Do you realize what this could mean for your startup's future if you don't fix this? You could be leaving serious money on the table.

So let’s fix it right now. I’m going to show you a simple framework I’ve used myself – and trust me, it works.

3-Step Framework to create a crystal-clear message

Okay, so it’s a 3-step framework, and it will help you make your messaging crystal clear so people visit your sales page and immediately know how you help them.

It goes like this:

1. We help [target audience]
2. Achieve [outcome]
3. Without [pain point]
Framework
Let me give you an example with out productivity app:

"We help remote-working parents structure their day and get important work done, without sacrificing time with their kids."

Solid, right?

That one sentence tells people:

✅ Who you help
✅ What you help them achieve
✅ And how you make their life easier

✏️ Now pause here for a second and ask yourself:

• Who do we help?
• What result do we help people achieve?
• What pain do we remove?

Once you’ve got that - let’s move to the most important step. Because this framework alone won't do much if you don’t use it right.

Bringing it all together

Now that you know who you help and how - what do you do with that? You turn it into your full marketing message.

So you put it on your website, your ads, your sales calls.
Where to show your messaging
Remember - your main goal is that when someone lands on your website, they immediately know that your product is made for them.
